Bridge over the River Kwai

You may have seen the movie "Bridge over the River Kwai" at sometime or another. That is what makes this town of Kanchanaburi famous. It is located on the River Kwai and is a nice place to hang out for a few days. I stayed in a nice bungalow that is actually right on the river on stilts.

Day trip to Erawan Falls

I took a day trip from Kanchanaburi to Erawan Falls which is a gorgeous waterfall with seven tiers. I climbed to the top (about 2.5 km) and was rewarded with a great swimming hole. It was really hot out and the falls were very refreshing. The water was crystal clear and it was a great setting.

Bridge over the River Kwai

On the same day trip we visited what is called Hellfire Pass. This is a section of where the Death Railway went through and was one of the hardest areas for them to build. This railway was built during WWII by the Japanese looking for an overland route through Burma into India. Thousands of POW's and local Thai's died building the bridge and Hellfire Pass was one of areas with the biggest loss of life. I also visited (and rode a train over) the actual Bridge over the River Kwai that made the movie famous.
